History of the RM of Wawken No. 93
Welcome to the Rural Municipality of Wawken No. 93, a proud rural community located in southeastern Saskatchewan. Incorporated on January 1, 1913, the RM has more than a century of history shaped by agriculture, rural living, strong communities, and generations of residents who have called this area home.
The municipality surrounds the Town of Wawota and the Village of Kennedy, connecting farms, rural residences, local businesses, and neighbouring communities throughout the region.
Our Community
The RM of Wawken No. 93 is home to residents who value the space, independence, and community spirit that come with rural Saskatchewan living. According to the 2021 Census of Population, the municipality had a population of 614 residents and covered approximately 743.5 square kilometers. This represented a 7.5% increase from the 2016 population of 571.
Across the municipality, farmsteads, acreages, rural properties, roads, and natural areas form a landscape that reflects both the heritage and continuing development of southeastern Saskatchewan.
Agricultural Growth & Infrastructure Development
Agriculture remains an important part of the identity and economy of the RM of Wawken No. 93. Statistics Canada reported agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting as the municipality’s largest employment industry category in the 2021 Census data.
For generations, local producers and farm families have helped shape the municipality. That agricultural foundation continues today alongside rural businesses, services, transportation, recreation, and other economic activity.
The RM is committed to maintaining the roads, infrastructure, services, and responsible municipal governance needed to support residents, agricultural producers, businesses, and future development.
Nature & Recreation
One of the distinctive features of the area is its connection to the Kenosee Lake and Moose Mountain region.
Kenosee Lake is located in southeastern Saskatchewan near Moose Mountain Provincial Park, an area known for forests, lakes, trails, camping, boating, fishing, golfing, hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, and other year-round outdoor recreation.
This combination of productive agricultural land and nearby natural amenities gives the Wawken area a character that is distinctly southeastern Saskatchewan — open prairie and farmland complemented by lakes, trees, parks, and recreational opportunities.
