Before beginning any type of development within the RM, ratepayers must submit a Development Application to the Office. “Development” includes the construction or alteration of buildings, changes in land use, and the installation or relocation of fences within road allowances. Development must not proceed until the application is reviewed and approved by Council. There is no fee for Development Applications in the RM of Wawken.

Additionally, the RM is responsible for the enforcement of The Construction Codes Act, which came into force January 1, 2022. Under this Act, a Building Permit is required for most new construction, renovations, additions, and any buildings with sleeping accommodations. This includes farm buildings with residential or commercial use. Only solely agricultural buildings without residential or commercial use (such as bins, shops, and barns) are exempt. Building permits must be obtained before work begins, and inspections by a Licensed Building Official will be required at key stages.
